Mickey Mantle played center field for the New York Yankees from 1951 to 1968. He is regarded by many as being the greatest switch hitter of all time, batting .282 left-handed and .334 right-handed. Mantle was a 20-time all-star and won 7 World Series championships. In 1956 Mantle won the “triple crown”, an unofficial baseball title for a player who leads their league in three categories: batting average, home runs, and runs batted in.
The 1957 Topps #95 Mickey Mantle comes from a set which featured the first modern card dimensions – 2.5 inches wide and 3.5 inches tall. In 1957 Mantle won the second of his back-to-back league MVP awards, posted his career-high batting average of .365, and throughout the whole season hit into only five double plays. Mantle reached base in 1957 more times than he had total outs.
